Theme 4: Three point lighting
- Due Feb 7 by 11:59pm
- Points 30
- Submitting a website url or a file upload
Task
Each week, post 6 photos that fit the weekly theme: 3 unedited, and a version of those 3 with edits made in Lightroom or Photoshop. This week: Three point lighting! Design your lights to make a better photograph.
Purpose
Calling yourself a photographer because you can operate a camera is like calling yourself a chef because you can operate an oven. The true value of your photos comes from how you design and control your environment to make a better photograph--namely, moving the lights around. There's LOTS of ways you can design your lighting, but the three point lighting setup is a classic.
Criteria for Success
Successfully upload 3 photos unedited photos that fit the theme, as well a second version of the 3 with edits made in Lightroom or Photoshop.
Use jpegs unless otherwise stated in that week’s theme.
You can upload your files in a .zip or .7z. Additionally, if you have a Flickr account, website, or other online portal you’d prefer to use, post your photos there and turn in a URL as your assignment.
Rubric
30 points total.
- 5 points for 3 unedited photos.
- 5 points for the edited versions of the 3 photos
Knowledge & Skills
Okay. Week 1. You found the "on" button, and the shutter button. Put your camera on Auto, or perhaps Creative Auto set to Brighter. Start clickin'!
Chimping is another useful technique for beginners. Take a shot, hit Play to view your last photo, and decide by looking at it how to change your settings. Overexposed? Underexposed? Color balance messed up? Adjust accordingly!
But what about all the computer stuff? In Lightroom, using an SD card reader or the USB plugged into your camera, use File > Import. Don't worry 'bout the import dialog or anything yet, just hit go. Select your 3 favorites, right-click, choose Export, select jpeg, and put 'em in a folder. Back in Lightroom, click the big Develop button up top. Mess around with the settings, doesn't matter what you do, and export again. Find that folder, right click and use 7zip to turn it into a .zip. In Canvas on this assignment, click Upload and choose your file.
