But it's not required.  A clear genre (product, wedding, fashion, etc) Purpose Now that you know what all those buttons and lights do, it's time to put them to use in the most professional way possible. Criteria for success A student who chooses to shoot a wedding and a student who hikes 20 miles to shoot wilderness photos will have very different photographic journeys. Week 9: Food Submit Assignment Due   Mar 13  by  11:59pm   Points   30   Submitting   a text entry box or a file upload Task Each week, post 6 photos that fit the weekly theme: 3 unedited, and a version of those 3 with edits made in Lightroom or Photoshop.  This week:  FOOD!   Purpose  (Links to an external site.) Look at these delicious meals. LOOK AT IT!   All of these are for fast food and microwave TV dinners, usually extruded out of plastic bags that were shipped out of Cincinnati like five years ago. It's the lowest quality, least fresh food you can eat! And through the powerful lie within a great photograph, it all looks like a beautiful dream that tastes great and came straight from the farm.  Criteria for Success Successfully upload 3 unedited images and 3 Lightroom-edited images. The food should be beautiful. As a MANDATORY part of the shot, include 1 "fresh" ingredient off to the side. I don't care if you opened a 99 cen
Week 8: Night Time Submit Assignment Due   Mar 6  by  11:59pm   Points   30   Submitting   a text entry box or a file upload Task Each week, take photos fitting the theme and upload your 3 favorites AND their edits in Lightroom. This week's theme: Night photography.  Purpose Night photography brings out some unique challenges. For one thing, it's the ultimate test of your muscle memory! Like a soldier assembling his gun blindfolded, you don't have the luxury of seeing all those camera buttons at night. A good photographer can modify their settings with ease even in pitch darkness.  Second, the total lack of light means uniquely compensating for that with your exposure. If you have a subject (like a person) You might expose them with a flash, followed by a full minute of exposure to get the starry night behind them.  Criteria for Success Your edited and unedited photos will demonstrate 1 or more techniques for night photography, such as:

Theme 7: Photogrammetry Submit Assignment Due   Feb 28  by  11:59pm   Points   30   Submitting   a website url or a file upload Task Photogrammetry is a HUUUGE subject! We'll do our best to generate a textured 3D model, but all I REALLY need you to turn in is a screenshot of a point cloud. Purpose Photogrammetry is measuring from photographs, and in modern context it involves turning photos into a 3D model. Photogrammetry is a major aspect of modern film and game pipelines. Museums are using photogrammetry to preserve human culture, and insurance companies are using photogrammetry to assess whether your roof is dangerous.  You can even get 3D scanned for your wedding!  Criteria for Success Although a robust 3D pipeline isn't going to be achieved in 2 weeks in a non-3D class, the process for photogrammetry is only a few steps:  Set up your scene for scanning Take photos correctly Process all your photos Turn your photos into a point cloud Tur

Theme 6: Panorama Submit Assignment Due   Feb 14  by  10:45am   Points   30   Submitting   a website url or a file upload Task Each week, post 6 photos that fit the weekly theme: 3 unedited, and a version of those 3 with edits made in Lightroom or Photoshop.  This week: PANORAMA !   Purpose Panoramas are one of the most jaw-dropping ways to shoot the world around you, but they impose specific technical challenge. Lens choice, stitching software, and learning from your mistakes all play in together for a great panorama.   Criteria for Success Successfully upload TWO panoramas. Since they're made out of a ton of photos, I don't think 3 is needed :P Use jpegs unless otherwise stated in that week’s theme. You can upload your files in a .zip or .7z. Additionally, if you have a Flickr account, website, or other online portal you’d prefer to use, post your photos there and turn in a URL as your assignment. Rubric 30 points total. 5 points for 3

Theme 5: HDR Submit Assignment Due   Feb 7  by  11:59pm   Points   30   Submitting   a website url or a file upload Task This week, post 3 photos taken in the theme.  This week:  High Dynamic Range!  Upload 3 HDRs, not 3 brackets. Purpose High:  A large quantity Dynamic:  Can be adjusted in real time Range:  The highest and lowest numbers in a set. Many photo scenarios are impossible to capture in entirety with a single shot. The brilliant sun requires a dark exposure, and the shadowy cave right next to the sun requires a light exposure. However, you can shoot MULTIPLE photos with MULTIPLE exposures (dark, middle, bright). These are called brackets, and measured in Exposure values. A high dynamic range can be massaged into a “look” also unlocks the full stylistic potential of your Camera Raw files (CR2.) A shot with no lighting design can still be turned into a dazzling and colorful photo. Also, HDRs can be saved in special 32 bit formats that RETAI

week5

Task Complete the 30 day art challenge, taking a different photo per theme each day. Yes, you can attempt multiple photos on a single day. Purpose A 30 Day Art Challenge covers TONS of ground, and has so many subjects that it’ll do wonders to your autodidactic learning skills (googling your own answers.) A former student did this for her final project, and I was so amazed at the results and her growth that I thought it should be an official project.   Criteria for Success Your photos don’t NEED to be taken once per day. For instance, a walk around Seattle might let you get a photo for Architecture, Self Portrait, Street Photography, and Motion Blur in one day. Heck, why not panic and do all 30 themes on the night before it’s due? However, they should all be distinct; don’t turn in 4 nearly identical photos for a hard light sunset symmetrical street and expect us not to notice.   Your Lightroom Catalog should provide everything we need to view all your photos (save 4 star
